Executive Summary
David E. Carlson is a pioneer in the development of interactive newspaper products and is internationally recognized as one of the foremost experts in the field. I have more than 25 years of experience in virtually all facets of daily newspaper journalism and am an experienced consultant, university professor, teacher, and presenter at international conferences, meetings and symposia.
I have been editor, managing editor, design editor, regional editor, reporter and photographer on newspapers from 7,200 to 291,000 circulation. I also have been a columnist for national and international magazines and am an often-published food and wine critic.
Since 1988, I have been involved in all facets of online media. I have given more than 100 presentations about online journalism and the future of newspapers on five continents and have been called "a pioneer" and the "father of the modern interactive newspaper."
I also am an experienced consultant and teacher, having taught graduate and undergraduate classes at the university level from 1993 to present.
I was national president of the Society of Professional Journalists for 2005-06 and have been listed in Who's Who in the World since 2009 and in Who's Who in America since 2006.
I serve on the board of directors of the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation and am past president of the Albuquerque Press Club and the North Central Florida Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. I currently hold the James M. Cox, Jr. Foundation/The Palm Beach Post professorship in New Media Journalism at the University of Florida.
Current Responsibilities
Founding director, Interactive Media Lab, and James M. Cox, Jr. Foundation/The Palm Beach Post Professor of New Media Journalism, College of Journalism and Communications, University of Florida, Gainesville.
The college is the nations second largest journalism school with 70+ faculty members and 3,500 majors in departments of advertising, journalism, public relations, telecommunication and graduate programs. Duties include full responsibility for all Interactive Media Lab funds and activities, supervising personnel and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Education
Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, 1973. Major: journalism graphics; minors, English, art. I also have 30 hours toward a Master of Arts in Journalism and have completed dozens of workshops and seminars.
