Darren Preston Lane; Sins and a Spider
In 1995, I took a Fine Art Photography course at the University of Florida. This is a part of my final class presentation. Although my Bachelors is in Photojournalism, I feel that it was important also use the other disciplines of photography. Fine Art is no acception to the rule of photography, I like the experimentation that is available with it. Photo-journalism is straight forward, strict and provides certain limited applications for experimentation. Don't get me wrong, I feel that photography is always in a constant struggle to show the viewer the "Art of Photography."
"My mission is to explain, not exploit."
Tarantulas are very docile creatures, they are easy to hold and to photograph.
In an attempt to understand spiders we must first understand ourselves.
I like to use the spider as a metaphor. Creating a certain uneasiness between the viewer an the spider. My idea is to cause the viewer to see that the spider is only a creature. Unfortuenately, spiders have been an object of terror and not easily accepted.
By placing the spider on bare flesh, the viewer is compelled to wonder if the people in the photos were in any way hurt. The answer is no. Neither the spider or the people involved were in any danger.
