Sony Playstation

Sony Playstation

The Sony Playstation took the market by storm in the 90's. With a unique design, easy setup, and wide game base by its release, the Playstation crushed all challengers said Lacey O'Rourke, lead game advisor at a Gainesville Gamestop. She said it was the first console to hold its games on discs as well as have a large memory card.

The console took gaming to another level with more realistic graphics and better control over characters. The Playstation also offered the first controller with dual bumpers and dual analog controls aside from the conventional D-pad. The controller also rumbled whenever there anything physical happened in the games. The Playstation was easily operated, each button worked indepdently as well as dependently of each other. This allowed for mass customization of the movement of the characters, making each game more life-like. The Playstation later slimmed down to a more portable version called the PS One and was better suited for playing on the road in vehicles equipped with televsions.

"The PS2 gave players a stronger game base than the orginal Playstation," said O'rourke. Now Sony ventured around the possibility of online game play. Though the Playstation 2's online network was much weaker than the Xbox's She said the games created for the PS2 were of better quality. She also said that the PS2 had more game titles. The PS2 could play DVDs as well CDs and had even more space for memory on its eight-mega byte memory cards, four more mega bytes than the orginal Playstation.

"This is where Sony really evolved," said O'rourke. She said the highly evolved PS3 gave the Xbox 360 a run for its money when in was released in the late 2000s. The PS3 gave gamers the full online experience, the ability to play DVDs, CD's and Blu Ray movies. "With the addition of the core processor for Blu Ray, the graphic capability for the PS3 far exceeded all other consoles," said O'rouke. She said the each game was in the best quality High definition. One of the best features of the PS3 was that each game was on Blu Ray discs as well. The storage capacity of a Blu Ray disc is larger than any other disc available. The more space, the longer each game. Games that could normally be beaten in a few days, could now take weeks.

Another cool addition to the PS3 pool was the six-axis controller said O'rourke. "Gamers could now move characters with the normal buttons on the controller as well as with the motion of their hands," she said. "The concept is similar to the Nintendo Wii's.

Sony PSP

Not too much to be said about the PSP other than it was Sony's answer to the handheld console demand in the Mid-2000s. The PSP plays movies made specifically for it. It acts as an MP3 player and a gaming console with mini-disc games that play on a light colorful screen. The buttons are similar to the PS2's without the second row of bumpers.

Recently, Sony released the PSP Go with internet capabilities. Games could be downloaded and saved on an internal hard drive and the PSP Go operates similar to the PSP, buttons and all.
