Wakefest 2010

The South Shore of Lake Wauburg was crowded with UF wakeboarders and spectators on Saturday April 10, as Wakefest 2010 brought together some of the university's best riders for an easy-going competition.

The contest, which was also a fundraiser for the club, was organized into five divisions, and any student could register to ride in the event for $20.

Riders of all skill levels, from beginners to pros, entered the contest, and the focus was on fun instead of scores.

Those who preferred to stay dry dangled their feet off the docks and soaked up the sun as they watched high-flying aerial performances by competitors.

Others happily volunteered to be ballast for the boat in order to get a closer look at the action.

A table stacked with a small mountain of pizzas sustained hungry students, and music and free merchandise from FUEL TV kept the crowd's energy up from the event's 9 a.m. start time until well into the late afternoon.

There was also a prize raffle where a $5 ticket could win students a T-shirt, skateboard deck, board bag or even a pair of bindings worth several hundred dollars.

All proceeds from raffle ticket sales, competition registration fees and the sale of Wakefest T-shirts went towards funding the Gator Wake and Ski Club's trip to the 2010 Wakeboarding Collegiate Nationals in San Diego.
