What Is a Black Celebrity Gossip Blog?

"This is not
Oprah or CNN"
--"Disclaimer," The YBF

"The Young, Black, and Fabulous" blog comes with a disclaimer. Among other things, the creator of the blog, Natasha Eubanks, makes it known that this is not your typical Web site. "This is not Oprah or CNN," writes Eubanks. An examination of the colorful commentary found on "The YBF," is one reason why gossip fans are bypassing traditional news sources, and viewing blogs instead. "The YBF" is just one of many Black gossip blogs that have popped up since blogging software (Blogger, WordPress) became more accessible to the masses.

A blog, or weblog, "is a personal Web site that is easily updated on a daily basis." Blogs allow anyone with a Internet-connected device to post on an array of topics. Blogging software allows the blogger to post pictures, audio, and/or video, followed by commentary from the editor, with an opportunity for readers to respond. The simplicity of the blogging software allows bloggers to make updates frequently. The immediate accessibility of the Internet is an advantage gossip blogs have over traditional media. Gossip fans can access their favorite celebrity gossip blogs at any time of the day. The Blogosphere, or the network of blogs, allows for an open exchange of ideas, whether fact, fiction, or pure gossip.

Black gossip fans are joining in on the social phenomena of blogging. "More and more people are starting to look to blogs for their news," says Danielle of "That's Not Hott!" (www.tnhott.blogspot.com),"...the market was screaming for more juicy gossip. So I guess that's how I ended up here."

For Angel Laws, creator and editor of "Concrete Loop," deciding what topics to discuss on her blog comes down to her own personal taste. "Anything that looks likes something I'd like," she told gakcity.com in 2008. Black celebrity gossip blogs, such as "Concrete Loop," are evolving into full service news and entertainment sites."Concrete Loop" now covers topics ranging from celebrity gossip to politics.
