A 2008 Presidential Nominee

Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, who ran as John Kerry's vice presidential running mate in 2004, continues to use the theme of the "Two Americas" that he outlined during his first campaign, putting himself forward as an advocate for America's working class and those afflicted by poverty. Edwards has described poverty, affordable health care and US withdrawal from Iraq as his main issues of concern.

Where He Stands on the Issues

Global Warming

One of Edwards's campaign's main focuses is fighting global warming. He plans to make his presidential campaign carbon neutral by limiting energy consumption and buying carbon offsets for the energy they do end up using. He will be working with NativeEnergy to provide the carbon offsets.

Health Care

John Edwards at a Speech

On February 5, 2007, Edwards unveiled his plan for universal health care. The plan has two components: revenue sources and cost containment. the revenue sources component calls for employers, government, insurance companies, and individuals to all take responsibility for funding universal health care. The total public cost of the plan would be $90-$120 billion per year, paid for by eliminating the 2001 tax cuts for those who make more than $200,000 per year. The cost containment component refers to six ways in which Edwards proposes to reduce costs in the health care system, including reducing the cost of preventative care to little or nothing for patients.

Iraq

Edwards has said that the decision to go to war in Iraq was a mistake and has apologized for his 2002 vote to authorize funding for the war. He favors gradual troop withdrawal and concurrent training of Iraqi troops, as well as and removing American contractors. Instead, he wishes to award such reconstruction contracts to Iraqi businesses in an effort to promote the Iraqi economy and reduce unemployment in Iraq.Edwards was a vocal critic of the Iraq War troop surge of 2007, calling the surge the "McCain Doctrine" in reference to Sen. John McCain's unwavering support for the strategy.

Same-Sex Marriage

Edwards has said that he is not ready to support same-sex marriage. In 2004, Edwards stated that he was opposed to same-sex marriage, although he also objected to a Constitutional amendment against it. He said the issue should be left to individual states to decide. However, Edwards does now offer support for civil unions and partnership benefits.

Immigration

Edwards supported expanding the H-1B Visa program to increase the number of work Visas for immigrant workers. Edwards has generally supported expanding legal immigration to the United States while working with Mexico to provide better border security and stop illegal trafficking.
