R.E.M. has yet to hit their stride in the 2000s. It seems that they never quite regained their foothold since Berry left the band. "The rhythmic drive of R.E.M.'s best work was missing," wrote Tom Nawrocki, in reference to 2001's "Reveal." And 2004's "Around the Sun" was received with little fanfare.

Despite R.E.M.'s less successful albums in recent years, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in New York City on March 12, 2007, along with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, The Ronettes, Van Halen and one of Stipe's idols, Patti Smith.

All four members of R.E.M. were present for the ceremony and they performed four songs together, including "Gardening at Night" from their first EP, "Chronic Town."
