The Pass at Thermopylae

Ancient Thermopylae Map

The Spartans held their ground at the Middle Gate pictured in the center of the map. Before the arrival of the Persians, the aged Phocian Wall was rebuilt for use in blocking the pass.

The dotted line that runs along the bottom of the map is the route the Persians were led along to flank the Spartans who were protecting the middle gate.

By looking at the solid line that runs next to the gates, one can see how close the shoreline was to the cliffs, squeezing the Persians into small formations as they approached the Spartan lines.
