danny carey

Daniel Edwin Carey, known as Danny, the Tool drummer, was born May 10, 1961, in Lawrence, Kansas. Danny began playing percussion at the age of 10, focusing on the snare drum and later taking private lessons where he concentrated on the bongos. In his senior year of high school, he joined the school jazz band. While attending the University of Missouri, Danny began studying the theory of percussion in the areas of geometry, metaphysics and science, and later became versed in Sacred Geometry, which can be seen in the sequences and time signatures he uses in his drum playing. He also received classical training in percussion while in college, and performed several drum recitals. Danny moved to Los Angeles in 1986, where he later met Adam Jones through Tom Morello, guitarist of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, and became neighbors with Maynard James Keenan. Shortly thereafter, Tool was formed. While Danny’s most notable work comes from Tool’s library of complex, hard-hitting masterpieces, he also drums for bands such as Pigmy Love Circus and Volto on the side.
