The Look of Distance EducationDistance Education (DE) is "the process of extending learning, or delivering instructional resource-sharing opportunities, to locations away from a classroom, building or site, to another classroom, building or site by using video, audio, computer, multimedia communications, or some combination of these with other traditional delivery methods" (Instructional Telecommunications Council). More simply stated, instruction can be moved to the people, rather than moving the people to the instruction (Telg). As educational institutions expand their parameters, and as technological advances mandate an increased need for employee retraining, colleges increasingly serve a burgeoning, non-traditional student audience (ICC). Educating students at a distance has been a major component of many universities educational programs for decades (Telg). Learning via technology has also been recognized as one of the forces that drives the training and development practices in the corporate world.
