A guide to using smartphone apps while you travel

If you’re traveling and looking for something a little different than the run-of-the-mill hotel room, there are lots of options from your smartphone for staying somewhere nice while you travel.
Most travel sites such as expedia and orbitz have apps you can download and use. But if you’re looking to think outside of the box, here are two apps I really like to use.

Bed and breakfasts aren’t for your grandma anymore. With sites (and apps) like airbnb, these homey stays are not only affordable but easy to see and book with apps like the airbnb app. Complete with large photos and descriptions written by the owner, it’s easy to see where you should stay without resorting to Craigslist.

If you were ever in college, odds are you’ve stayed in a hostel at least once, especially if you were abroad. And, unlike scary movies would want you to believe, they can be clean, fun and are definitely cheap. Hostelworld is a reputable site that lets you book hostels all over, the this app has an easy to use interface and clear marks for what the price of the hostel is and what it’s rating is. There are also easy options to filter, so you can actually use this app if you want to book a hotel or know that you want to spend a little more money than the basic hostel room.

And if you need more proof that staying in hostels aren’t so bad, here are some pictures I’ve taken of the hostels I’ve stayed in.
