The conversation rate, size, cost, and even color of solar cells depend on the materials used. (img source)

While a lot goes into making solar cells, the semiconducting material in a cell is one of the most important aspects. A solar cell has two layers of semiconducting material -- one postively charged and one negatively charged -- and the type of material will determine how effective the cell will convert electricity. There are many options for what to use, but here’s a little more info on two important types.

Silicon
The most common material, silicon’s popularity comes from its balance of cost, flexibility, and effectiveness.

Graphene
A relatively new material, graphene solar cells are a promising new development in the industry.
