Students interested in going in the broadcasting, production or management tracks of television can have hands-on experience with the public television station Florida's WUFT-TV 5. The TV station is broadcast on Cox channel 5 and it's an affiliate of Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).
The station features the student-run program "First at Five," which covers local, state, national and international news. The program also covers sports and weather.
Florida's 5 gives students the opportunity to produce or report for a public TV station before graduating and working for a commercial station. The program recruits producers, directors, writers, anchors, reporters and technical personnel for sound and visuals. The program is featured Monday through Friday from 5 to 5:30 p.m.
WRUF-TV 6 is a weather and sports channel for the North Central Florida audience. The station is broadcast on Cox channel 6, and it's a commercial station owned and operated by the University of Florida.
WRUF features weather 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The channel covers forecasts and weather conditions for the cities covered in North Central Florida. Jeff Huffman is the chief meteorologist who trains students interested in broadcast meteorology.
The station also broadcasts Gator sports and North Central Florida sports. WRUF features news provided by the WUFT radio and TV stations. Students can get involved in the station by researching, writing, reporting and anchoring alongside the station staff.
