Layout Lingo

Page Layout:

The arrangement and style treatment of the elements and content on a page.

Thumb Space:

Extra space around a design a viewer would hold so your thumbs don't block any content.

Bleed:

Line beyond the design that an element must go beyond if it will extend off of the page. Past the bleed line has a 100% of getting cut off.

Margin:

Empty space between the trim and the content on the page. If something is outside the margins it has a chance of being cut off.

Alley:

The space between two columns of text.

Gutter:

The blank space between two facing pages

Trim Space:

The area between the margins and the bleed that has a chance of being cut.

Columns:

The area between the margins. A new document starts as one column unless changed.

Headline:

The large text that describes the story

Sub-Headline:

Next sentence after the headline. Smaller and less important, but gives more detail;

Byline:

The name of the person who wrote the article.

Body Copy:

The main copy not including the headline.

Cutline:

A caption for a photo.

Double Truck:

A two page spread.
