Timeline of historical in Haiti :

1492- Christopher Columbus lands on the island


1503- The first African Slaves are brought to Haiti

1801- Former slave Toussaint L'Ouverture ends slavery in Haiti and puts himself in charge of the island.

1804- Haiti is now independent. Former slave Jean Jacques Dessalines becomes Emperor of Haiti.

1844- The island becomes Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

1915- U.S. begins occupation of Haiti.

1934- U.S. ends 19 year occupation of Haiti

1957 - Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier takes power.

1964 - Duvalier makes himself president-for-life becoming a dictator.

1971 - Duvalier dies. His 19-year-old son Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" also makes himself president-for-life.

1986- Baby Doc flees Haiti.

1990 - Jean-Bertrand Aristide is elected president in a free election.

1991- A military coup removes Aristide

1994- U.S. President Bill Clinton places Aristide back in power. Aristide puts an end to the Haitian army.

1996- Rene Preval is elected president.

2000- Aristide is elected president for the second time.

2003- Voodoo is recognized as a religion.

2004- A rebel movement takes over moving Aristide into exile. The same year, U.N. peacekeepers begin to take over for U.S. troops in Haiti.

2006- Rene Preval is elected president since Aristide.

2009- Former president Bill Clinton is made the Haiti special envoy.

2010- A 7.0 magnitude earthquake changes Haiti.

2011- Former president of Haiti, Jean-Claude Duvalier, comes back to Haiti to face charges of corruption and human rights violations.

2011- Michelle Martelly becomes president.

2012- Haitian Parliament places Laurent Lamothe as prime minister.
