Eating and Buying Local

The Farmers Market

The Gainesville Farmers Market is arguably the best place to buy local produce in Gainesville. The market is located in Bo Diddley Plaza in downtown Gainesville. It's open 52 weeks per year but only on Wednesdays, 4-7 p.m. The market offers products from nearly 70 vendors, who sell fresh and organic produce, herbs, jellies and jams, coffee, homemade candies, and all kinds of other treats. Vendors come from all over Gainesville and surrounding areas, like High Springs, Hawthorne, and Lake City.

What the Vendors Have to Say

One of the new vendors at the Gainesville Farmers Market is Frog Song Organic Farm. The farm is located between Hawthorne and Waldo on Highway 301. This is the farm's first season. They started planting crops in October and have been producing since March. The farm is mainly operated by owner Amy and her husband. A farm apprentice also helps, as do their neighbors, on occasion. What does Amy say is the best part of buying local? "You're keeping your money in the community, your produce is safer because it hasn't been on a truck for days, and you can actually talk to the farmers."
