Graham is my father and he currently works at the U.S. Embassy in The Hague. He speaks English and Spanish fluently.
He said that learning his second language, which is Spanish, wasn't difficult for him because he started at an early age and because he was exposed to it a significant amount when he was growing up. He also said it was easy for him to learn because of personal initiative.
He said that as far as his professional life goes, knowing a foreign language has significantly affected his experience. He has worked in Mexico, Costa Rica and Paraguay, and because of this, the local citizens and most of the local employees only spoke Spanish. He said that if he didn't know Spanish he wouldn't have been able to connect with his employees as well and would not have had performed as well as he did.
