The goal of fossil preparation is to clean the fossil and put it together if it is broken.

Sometimes this process is relatively easy as in shells, and sometimes is complex as in vertebrates.

How easy or hard it is to prepare a fossil depends on many factors. In the case of vertebrates some of the variables are the type of sediment and bone.
