Surya Namaskar: Sun Salutations
A popular series of poses in yoga is Surya Namaskar, or Sun Salutations. This series seems to resonate through many different styles of yoga. In practicing different styles, I have done several different variations of the series.
Sun Salutations is done in two parts, focusing on each leg in one rotation.
Remember that before preforming any kind of new exercise, it is important to consult your physician.
My friend Michelle is going to model the most basic of the Sun Salutations to get you started.
In most classes I have attended, we start with a seated breathing exercise to help focus our practice. Some practices use Sun Salutations as a warm-up for the class. However, I find that doing a gentle pre-warm up helps my practice.
This can be done by lying on your mat and slowly stretching out each of your limbs being sure to match your breath with your movements. Lift and lower each leg, then both. Try some bicycling motions with your legs. In a seated position, stretch out and lift and lower your arms. There are many different ways to warm up. Be sure to listen to your body and move in ways you feel respect it.
