Composed of the Japanese words oru which means to fold and kami that means paper, origami has been around

"Traditional origami is characterized by open-access folding patterns and sequences passed down orally or anonymously from generation to generation."

Paper was a very valuable item when it was created the 6th century. When folding paper to create items such as animals, flowers and other figures it was also not a hobby, but instead as gifts of good fortune. Though the idea is still realitively the same, it has grown to be a widespread cultural pastime and artform.
