According to New York Times article, the rise in popularity of cooking shows on TV makes it easier and more accessable to cook at home.

So popular, in fact, that gourmet food and cooking has reached the mainstream on broadcast stations with shows like Hell's Kitchen.

Of course, we can't forget about the bloggers. food and cooking blogs have started their own online community, swapping recipes, dishing (couldn't resist) about which expensive ingredients can be substitued for cheaper ones.
