Restaurants in Gainesville:

Gainesville is among many other things a culinary haven. Hidden in the midst of fast food chain restaurants, sports bars, and loud clubs, we can find small restaurants which meet the finest standards of modern cuisine. Here you may find any kind of food you can imagine. Gainesville Florida is home to over 80 restaurants specializing in anything from traditional American brunch to midnight Thai wonders. One of the best things about Gainesville is that no matter what time of the day it is you may always find an open restaurant. In Gainesville food never sleeps and neither do the hungry. I have spent the last 3 years of my undergraduate career trying to navigate Gainesville’s culinary scene. It is incredibly hard to translate these experiences into text. I would like to begin by a small introduction to the population of Gainesville, Florida which will hopefully help me explain why the culinary scene is so incredibly diverse.

Gainesville Florida has 130,898 citizens according to the city’s webpage. It is home to the University of Florida, one of the top universities in the country with a student population of more than “50,000” students according to the University of Florida’s website. Because of the vast student population the city has become a hub for international cuisine that can cater to the demands the university’s diverse population. Gainesville boasts not only a varied culinary scene, but one deeply embedded in tradition. Some of the most popular food venues in the city have been around for over 20 years. These restaurants have become an essential part of student living and tradition. In Gainesville food is not only a source of energy but a way to participate in cultural and collegiate traditions.

If you are interested in navigating the Restaurant scene there are three places you must visit to have the authentic Gainesville experience. You must visit: Mother’s Pub and Grill, Dragonfly Sushi, and the Gelato Company. These restaurants offer great food at reasonable prices and will give you a good sense of what Gainesville is about.

dragonflywonton Mother’s Pub and Grill is a sports bar owned by a group of friends who decided they would start their own bar back in the 90’s. The restaurant has been around for over 15 years and is still doing well despite the current economic crisis. If you decide to stop by at Mother’s Pub I would suggest ordering a plate of Mother’s chicken wings. The wings are deep fried in beer and served with your choice of sauce. Mother’s hosts $0.35 chicken wings every Monday night from 7p.m. until closing. Chicken wing Monday has been a popular event for years, and continues to attract students.

Dragonfly Sushi is a more upscale restaurant. It is located in the Gainesville’s Downtown area and is one of the most popular restaurants in Gainesville. The restaurant offers Valentine’s Day reservations a full nine months in advanced because of its immense popularity. If you are looking to try some of the best sushi you have ever had, or are in the mood for some Japanese cuisine I suggest stopping by this restaurant. While there make sure to order a serving of the house’s fried crab wontons drizzled in apricot glaze. The restaurant also has an excellent dessert selection and carries over 10 different kinds of Japanese tea. This restaurant is a popular dinner location for birthdays and romantic outings.

The last stop is the Gelato Company also located in Downtown Gainesville. I have been here about once every two weeks during my time in Gainesville Florida. The restaurant is a small Italian café which serves freshly made gelato every day. The menu contains fantastic options for lunch with flavorful creations which are both filling and light. I would recommend the chicken Panini and the cheesy potato soup for those looking to try the Gelato Company for the first time. This combination is a perfect blend of flavors that will leave you wanting to come back for another visit.

Visiting these three locations will give you a deeper understanding of the Gainesville culinary scene. Here you may find a little of a multitude of cultures and delicious culinary creations made fresh every day. This is perhaps the greatest things about Gainesville, the availability of fresh products.
