If you can't have Abuela's cooking, there are a few nearby places you should know about!

This Publix carries my Abuela’s favorite brand of Cuban-style canned beans, El Ebro. It also has my favorite Cuban soda, Jupina, which is pineapple flavored soda. They now sell Diet Jupina.

I love Mi Apa! Its Cuban coffee is the best in town and the guava pastries are delicious. The owner is Cuban and the food proves to be an authentic representation of classic dishes.

Flaco's Cuban Bakery

Address: 200 West University Avenue Gainesville, FL 32601

Phone: 352-371-2000

Tue 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Wed-Fri 11 a.m. - 2:30 a.m. Sat 12 p.m. - 2:30 a.m.

This is by far Mi Apa's biggest competition in town. The atmosphere is a little divey, but the Cuban sandwiches are very good. The bakery has a large pastry selection, and it's open late.
