Commonly used ingredients
You'll notice a trend throughout the recipes; Cubans love flavorful spices, and we cook with a lot of peppers and onions. The ingredients listed here are the key ingredients for the majority of our foods. Even our beans contain cumin and green peppers! All of these ingredients can be found at your local market. In addition, most of these ingredients work well with non-cuban dishes, especially the complete seasoning.

Q: When did you begin to cook and why did you begin?
A: I began at the age of 17. My sister, Josefa, taught me. I had a boyfriend at the time that I thought I might marry and he wanted me to learn to cook.
Q: Do you remember what you first cooked?
A: Black and red beans
Q: What is your favorite dish to cook?
A: Arroz con Pollo (Chicken with rice)
Q: Why did you think it was important for me to learn?
A: First, It’s your tradition. Second, it’s delicious. It’s about maintaining the tradition.
Q: Do you think me learning to cook has made us closer?
A: I believe so, because it’s a shared bond now. I think we became even closer and united once there was something we could share a love for.
