Fingerspelling

"Fingerspelling" is the act of spelling words in ASL. Each word is constructed by the ASL letters, so it is important that you learn the alphabet, pictured below.

Deaf people most commonly use fingerspelling to spell their names, but they also use it to spell out the names of places, technical words, acronyms and any word whose sign they cannot recall.

For a word that includes a double letter, one can either tap the air twice or slide the hand across.

Experienced signers fingerspell extremely quickly, so don't worry if you are spelling slowly. You're just starting out, but with practice your fingerspelling will become more fluid and fast.

You can practice your fingerspelling interpreting at Dr. Bill Vicars' ASL Fingerspelling Practice Site.
