The UF Brigade: A Story in Words and Pictures

"Nearly every airliner that touches down at Augusto Cesar Sandino International Airport in Managua carries at least one group of eager volunteers who have come to help those less fortunate than themselves. They come from North America or Europe with the object of meeting and working alongside some of the most economically marginalized residents of the Western Hemisphere," writes Dr. Timothy Fogarty in his work on Nicaraguan voluntourism.

Fogarty, an anthropologist who worked in Nicaragua through Habitat for Humanity in Nicaragua during the late '80s now leads a group of students from the University of Florida each year for a six-week course on NGOs and grassroots development in Nicaragua.
