Community Supported Agriculture

In a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program, members pay an annual or seasonal fee that goes toward the farm's operating costs and, in turn, receive weekly or monthly shares of the harvest. Payment, usually collected before the growing season, is used when it is needed most to buy seeds, repair equipment and make other investments for the upcoming harvest.

During the season, CSA members receive as much food as nature and good farming provide. Sharing the burden of crop losses due to weather or pests helps farmers survive bad seasons. CSAs often introduce members to unusual and unfamiliar products, because having a guaranteed market allows growers to experiment. Sometimes CSA farmers include cooking tips and recipes, and like farmers at a farmers market, they are always available to teach their members about a new crop and how to eat it.

CSAs in the Gainesville Area

There are many CSAs available to Gainesville residents. Some have pick-up points on UF's campus while others allow members to pick up their weekly food supply at a farmers market. Here is a list of some of our local CSAs.
