In 1976, Mary Ellen Pofahl started the Gainesville Civic Ballet, which later became Dance Alive National Ballet. They are currently celebrating their 44th year in Gainesville, and the State Touring Company of Florida for the past 33 years. In 1986, Artistic Director Kim Tuttle took over Dance Alive and turned a regional company into a well respected and recognized national touring company. Dance Alive has toured 17 states as well as multiple other countries including those of Central America.

Dance Alive National Ballet is a tax-exempt 5013(C)3 non-profit dance company comprised of 12 professional dancers, who perform both at home and on tour.The current company has award-winning dancers from Russia, Brazil, Hungary, China, Cuba and the United States. Judy Skinner, director of grants and arts education programming, has been with Dance Alive since 1976 and has served as resident choreographer since 1979. Since 1976, a major component of Dance Alive has been it's outreach and educational programs geared towards the elderly, underserved, and at-risk populations.
