THE START

A four step guide to making it to first gear.

step 1

step 1

Fully compress the clutch with your left foot, compress the brake with your right foot. Turn the key to start the engine. The engine will not start unless the clutch is compressed.

*Using your left foot when driving will be a difficult adjustment because you will want to instinctively use the right foot on the clutch. If you’ve been driving an automatic for a long time, your left foot has just been sitting there unexploited. Your left leg will probably be very tired after the first day of clutch driving.

step 2

step 2

Release the emergency brake.

step 3

step 3

Put the car into first gear with the clutch still fully compressed.

*If you take your foot off of the clutch while the car is in gear and not moving the engine will stall out and you will have to restart it.

step 4

step 4

Take your right foot off the brake and place it on the accelerator. Release the clutch by easing your left foot upwards while simultaneously compressing the accelerator with your right foot.

*If you release the clutch too quickly the engine will stall out. Learning the right ratio for accelerator compression and clutch decompression while the car is stationary is the trickiest and most fundamental skill for beginners.
