I interviewed Ashley Smith, a nail technician in Gainesville, about ways to polish your nails at home. She had five tips for readers looking to make their manicures last!

1. Always, always , always use a base coat AND a top coat. She suggests OPI by Sephora base coat, and Seche Vite Top Coat. These two steps will make any color last longer on your nails.

2. Use caution when pushing back your cuticles! If you over-do it, they’ll look horrible.

3. When filing the edge of your nails, move in one direction.

4. Paint your nails in three even strokes. Any more than that, and you’ll get air bubbles.

5. Don’t bite your nails!

Ashley also suggested watching tutorials on YouTube because the people who make them have already tried a lot of different products and can help you choose which ones will work for you.

This video by Blair is the most detailed one Ashley has seen. She takes you step-by-step through the manicure process, and she even explains all of the tools you'll need to get your nails looking great!
