Dietary benefits of green tea

The links between green tea and weight loss are the weakest, said Cathy Weaver, a holistic medicine practitioner from Cooper City, Fla.

“Studies have shown that green tea can prevent obesity and lower cholesterol, but they are limited in number,” she said.

Despite the lack of studies to draw from, Weaver believes green tea does aid in weight loss.

Green tea may help people lose weight because it accelerates calorie burning, Weaver said.

A study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition conducted in November 1999 showed that drinking green tea increased the metabolism by four percent.

The study concluded that green tea has properties that promote fat oxidation.

“The jury is still out on whether green tea really does help burn fat or calories,” Weaver said. “I feel that there is a connection between the two.”

In the mean time, it won’t hurt anyone to drink green tea and come to their own conclusion, she said.
