The Independent Florida Alligator is the daily student newspaper of the University of Florida. The Alligator is the largest independently owned student-run newspaper in the United States. The Alligator has a daily circulation of 35,000 and readership of over 52,000. The paper prints every weekday during the spring and fall semesters (mid-August to early May) and on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer semesters. The Alligator has been financially and editorially independent from UF since 1973. The Alligator has been owned by Campus Communications, a non-profit and student-controlled entity, since its independence. Students from both UF and Santa Fe College are eligible to work at the paper. The Alligator is distributed free on campus and throughout the city of Gainesville. It contains a mix of campus, local and national news coverage. Each year the Alligator puts out a welcome back edition to welcome returning students, a new student and its most famous homecoming edition. Each year staff members line University Avenue to hand out the prestigious college paper to staff, residents, fans, students, visitors and alumni.
