The First Dive

Petya and Richard Corey dive the Nursery and Copenhagen on their Open Water check-out dives.

“Me and my husband wanted to do something together,” Corey said.

So, on a weekend in August 2007, the couple completed their Open Water certifications in Pompano, Florida. Their first dive was the Nursery.

“We saw a nurse shark on one of our dives. It was seven feet long,” Corey said.“I think it is a beautiful animal.”

She said they also saw a sea turtle and lobster.

Because their first experience was so good, save several equalization problems that put Petya back in the pool for a few more sessions, the couple is already in the middle of their Advanced class.

Corey said the greatest advice she can give new divers is to trust their instructors.

“Even if you have any kind of fears,” she said. “Share that. The instructors we had were magnificent.”
