How Domain Names are Acquired

  • The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a private, nonprofit organization formed to assume responsibility for the
    • IP address space allocation,
    • protocol parameter assignment,
    • domain name system management,
    • and root server system management
    • functions previously performed under U.S. Government contract by IANA and other entities.
  • Domain names ending with .com, .net or .org may be registered through competing registrars
  • Information about the registering entity is publicly available to allow rapid resolution of technical problems and to permit enforcement of consumer protection, trademark, and other laws
    • The registrar will make this information available to the public on a "Whois" site
