St. Augustine

St. Augustine was established by the Spainards in 1565, which became the first permanent European settlement in what would soon become the United States. Fort Castillo de San Marcos (pictured below) is the oldest land fortress in the U.S. The fort, which was built in the 1670s to protect St. Augustine and the Spainards, is still standing, and it has never fallen to armed attack.
