Each of the public broadcasting organizations uses the three public channels to transmit its own program package, comprising informative, cultural, educational and entertainment programs. A fixed combination of broadcasting organizations work together closely on each of the three channels.
|NL 1||NL 2||NL 3|
The 1st Dutch Television Channel has three broadcasters broadcasting on it. These are:
Algemene Vereniging Radio Omroep (AVRO). A general independent broadcasting association. The best viewed programs they have are mostly American productions, like Star Trek: Voyager, ER and The Practice.
Katholieke Radio Omroep (KRO). The only Catholic association. The Dutch sitcom "Then hapiness was normal" is their top program. At the moment they are the best viewed broadcasting association on Netherlands 1.
Nederlandse Christelijke Radio Vereniging (NCRV). A Protestant broadcaster. "Blik op de Weg" (Metal on the Road) is a program about traffic behaviors. It is a reality program with high-speed chases etc. This is the number one program of the NCRV.
The 2nd Dutch Television Channel started in 1965. Since then there has been a lot of changes. At the moment there are just like on NL1 three broadcasters broadcasting on it. These are:
Televisie en Radio Omroep Stichting (TROS). A second independent broadcasting organization that started in 1966. Their best programs are:
Evangelische Omroep (EO). An Evangelistic (Protestant) organisation. Probably the only broadcasting organization that uses its Protestant background in all their programming. This likely causes its low television ratings.
Bart's News Network. The association that started in 1998 only has a few hours on television but scores great under young people. It has a variety of programs that are specially made for the youth of today.
In 1988 the 3rd and last Dutch Television Channel was added to the public channels. The three broadcasters on this channel are:
Vereniging Arbeiders Radio Amateurs (VARA). A Social-Democratic organization that has a lot of news/informative programs. The program that attrackts the most people is a satiric program called "Kopspijkers" (Head nails). Further more it broadcasts programs like Frasier.
Vereniging Progresieve Radio Omroep (VPRO). Another independent organization that broadcasts programs about culture and information. It also has a lot of programs that are for children or young adults. It has 15 hours of air time on NL 3.
Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS))) is the umbrella organization for the public broadcasting organizations. Its main tasks are to coordinate programs and broadcasting conditions and to protect the common interests of the broadcasting organizations. In addition, NOS provides a large proportion of the news and sports programs.
