Since 1992 when commercial broadcasting was alowed by the governement in the Netherlands, the number of channels grew fast.
RTL4 and RTL5 where already there but they were not really Dutch channels, but from Luxembourg. Even though they are not from the Netherlands they were and are now seen as 100% Dutch.
The first real Dutch channel was SBS6, who entered the commercial system in 1995. In the same year TV-10, TMF and Veronica followed. TV-10 was bought by Fox in 1998.
The last addition to commercial channels is NET5, the brother of SBS6. Both SBS6 and NET 5 are part of the SBS Broadcasting S.A. (Scandinavian Broadcasting System).
RTL Veronique started broadcasting on October 2nd 1989. At first it aimed at the younger audience. Then TV-10 did not seem to have any success and RTL Veronique broadened their target audience. It started programming as the family station. In a short period of time the station, of which the name changed in RTL4, conquered the biggest audience in the Netherlands, which it still has.
The most popular program ever started and is still going strong on this channel. It is the first Dutch soap opera called "Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden. (Good Times, Bad Times)
RTL 5 is the brother channel of RTL4. It started in 1991. It started out to be a channel like RTL4 but soon they saw that this did not work. It has now changed in a news channel. Besides all the news it broadcasts sports, gameshows, reality TV and talkshows.
SBS 6 brings local, national and international programs to homes since 1995. The channel wants to be close to the people with daring, new, and surprising television. Its target audience is between 0-50 years old.
This channel started broadcasting "Weekend Miljonairs" (Who wants to be a millionair"). From the start it was a successfull program. Its production company, Endemol, sold the program to other countries and it can now be seen in countries like Germany, France and America.
NET 5 is the newest commercial channel in the Netherlands. It is the sister of SBS6 and complements this station in its programming. The most successfull programs that were on SBS6 moved to NET5 when it started, to give the channel a boost in ratings. The shows that are on now are: Disney, Party of Five, Ally McBeal. The Sopranos and Millenium, all hit-series around the world.
Veronica was the leading public broadcating associating in the Netherlands. In 1995 she decided to go commercial. There slogan "The Young One" speaks for their programming then and now. Programs as Friends, Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Seinfeld, The X-files and Walker can be seen on this TV-station.
In 1999 Endemol Productions made the program "Big Brother", which aired on Veronica. This program was such a success that it won from the soap "Good Times, Bad Times" in the war for ratings. The soap had been on first place since it started in 1991. There are various spinn-offs also made by Endemol showing in the Netherlands. Endemol also produced the program in Germany and other countries. In summer 2000 it will start producing Big Brother in the United States of America.
The Music Factory is almost the same as MTV, which is well known around the globe. Even though MTV was changed for the European market it still gives an "American" feeling. This feeling is also the strenght of the station. TMF started to be a Dutch music channel. Besides all the charts from around the world it also has national music. The TMF Awards, a spinn-off from the MTV Awards, is a program were the station is turned on for. The rest of the time young and old just turns it on to listen to music and get up to date on music news.
FOX took over the commercial channel TV-10 that did not have any success. Now as FOX it has a market share that is not bad. FOX broadcasts American FOX shows like "Roswell", "The Simpsons" and "Dawson's Creek". Besides these it also bought Dutch programs. One of them is the second most popular soap-opera "Goudkust" (Goldencoast).
