In trying to make the decision regarding which high definition television is right for you, it is important to remember that these specific televisions come in three main types, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

LCD High Definition Televisions

Advantages

LCD, or liquid crystal display, are the types of high definition televisions that are best for college students and for anyone looking for portability, as they are the easiest to transport from place to place and mount on walls. Also, their power demands are lower than plasma displays and CRT (cathode ray tube) televisions, which make them an excellent choice for those concerned with environmental protection. Individuals who are interested in having an alternate computer monitor will enjoy these HD types as well, as many of them have VGA inputs, and mountainous individuals will thrive on the fact that these television types are unaffected by altitude and air pressure.

Disadvantages

However, for those that want the highest quality images that are available, LCD televisions have the unfortunate characteristic of suffering from slight instances of dead pixels and are not always able to catch fast moving images.

Overall

I have found my specific LCD HD Television perfect for my situation; then again, I am a graduate student living in a small apartment. Those in similar scenarios, would find these television types to more than suit their needs.

Plasma High Definition Televisions

Advantages

For those that are fixated on finding the best quality images, plasma high definition televisions are the way to go. They have a high contrast ratio (30,000 to 1), rapid pixel responses that allow for limited blurry motions and wide viewing angles that guarantee viewers to always catch the action regardless of their location. It is little wonder that plasma sets are the television type of choice for those wishing to seek cinema-like experiences from the comfort of their own home.

Disadvantages

However, for all of these positive points, plasma high definition televisions are not the best types for those who live in high-altitude and/or areas with low air pressure, as these factors may cause some of them to buzz. They can also be plagued by burnt images much like their LCD counterparts, making constant maintenance of them a priority.

Overall

As stated before, plasmas are best for those seeking authentic cinematic experiences. Fans of sporting events will find themselves greatly appreciating this television type as well, as the rich image quality that these types provide will allow them to feel that much more a part of the festivities.

RP HD Televisions

Advantages

RP, or rear-projection high definition televisions, are perfect for those that desire the best picture quality on the largest screens. Essentially, those that desire their television space to include an entire wall in their room. While a plasma high definition television could possibly fulfill this task, sets that are capable are also extremely expensive, making rear-projection types the most cost-effective.

Disadvantages

The disadvantages of these television types are that they are not the most portable, and that they can be difficult to place on walls. Also, a problem unique to these types of televisions are that they require replacement lamps ever so often, adding an additional investment to an already-expensive purchase.

Overall

These television types are best for both movie fans who desire something that can provide that perfect cinematic experience at a level even beyond plasma high definition televisions. They are also perfect for video game players who want to feel like they are a part of the action.
