Freaking out about an important interview? Don’t! Here, you’ll find some basic and extremely helpful guidelines that will help you “Nail the Interview.”
Here are some basic interviewing rules and tips:
- Dress appropriately. See Attire for more information.
- Answer questions confidently with short specific answers. For help answering common interview questions see Answer.
- Ask questions throughout the interview. See Ask for sample questions.
- Bring a complete, one page, relevant resume. For resume tips, visit Resume.
- Bring your calendar with you! The potential employer may want to schedule another interview, a time for you to start, etc. You need to know when you are available!
- Follow up. It is important to send both an e-mail and a handwritten letter. A good skeleton for a follow-up note would be to start with the company and the potential position and segue into the skills that qualify and distinguish you. Ask them about the next steps and say thank you!
- Research, research, research. Know the company, the position and the interviewer.
- Don’t pull out your resume. Keep it upside down in a padfolio. You want the interviewer to be looking at you and listening to you instead of concentrating on what’s on your resume. This is your chance to tell them more about yourself. They can look at your resume any time they want.
- Turn off any cell phones, pagers, iPods, and anything else that could possibly make noise during your interview.
- Last, but not least, make eye contact and be confident!
