A Beginner's Guide to Boxing

Welcome to Pugilism 101, a Web site where casual boxing fans can become better acquainted with "The Sweet Science."

I hope you enjoy the experience. Boxing has come a long way since ancient times. It has produced many transcendent figures, including (but not limited to) Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali and, most recently, Oscar De La Hoya.

Along with baseball, it was the most popular sport in the United States in the first half of the 20th century.

It has, just as many of the warriors who stepped between the ropes into the squared circle, taken its fair share of bumps and bruises throughout the years. Yet, despite recent claims of boxing's decline, the sport is thriving.

This site will explain the scoring system of boxing, as well as descriptions of the various punches and other regulations.

Enjoy, and, in the words of the great former referee, Mills Lane: "Let's get it on!"
