Peter Lawrence Buck was born in Berkeley, Ca. on Dec. 6, 1956. He grew up on the West Coast before he and his family moved to Atlanta, Ga. when he was 13 years old. Buck remained in Atlanta until 1978. He dropped out of Emory University and moved to Athens.

Unlike Stipe, Buck discovered his love of music at an early age and was greatly influenced by pre-punk bands like The Velvet Underground and The Stooges.

In April of 2001, Buck briefly made news headlines for causing a drunken disturbance on a flight to London to play a show. The charges were eventually dropped.
