William Thomas Berry was born in Duluth, Minn. on July 31, 1958. Berry's family later moved to Wisconsin before settling in Macon, Ga. just before Berry started high school.

His musical tastes began early by listening to his siblings' Motown records and learning how to play the ukulele. At the age of 10 he began playing drums in the school band.

After high school, Berry and Mills became roommates in Macon before moving to Athens in 1978, where they met Stipe and Buck.

In 1995 Berry collapsed onstage during an R.E.M. show in Switzerland due to a brain aneurysm. After recording one more album with R.E.M. he decided to leave the band, saying that he did not have the level of commitment he once had.

After leaving R.E.M., Berry moved to Watkinsville, Ga. and became a farmer.
