- Thermopylae - The Battle to Save Greece

The Battle Continues

Spartan Statue

As Day 3 dawned, King Leonidas of the Spartans knew he was surrounded and except for several hundred Thespians and the Spartans, all the other Greek forces either withdrew or were dismissed by him.

It is this day that the Persians unleased their full assault on the Spartans, with so many archers that one Spartan supposedly said,"So much the better - we shall fight them in the shade!"

As the Greeks fought with reckless abandon, the Persian losses were even higher than the two previous days.

When Leonidas fell, fighting began vainly over his corpse and Spartans fought until their deaths quite literally tooth and nail.
