Tool guitarist Adam Thomas Jones was born in Park Ridge, Illinois, on January 15, 1965. Adam began dabbling in music very early in life, playing the violin in elementary school, and eventually playing a stand-up bass in his high school orchestra as well. Without any formal training, Adam also formed the band Electric Sheep while in high school with Tom Morello, who later became the guitarist of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. He then studied at the Hollywood Makeup Academy, where he learned to do traditional movie makeup, as well as sculpting and special effects design. Seeing himself as more of an artist than a musician, Adam did makeup on the set of several movies, television shows and commercials before joining up with Tool front man Maynard James Keenan and drummer Danny Carey in the late 1980s. He still uses his artistic abilities to design and direct Toolís music videos, in addition to designing or compiling much of the artwork for the bandís album inserts, which won him a Grammy Award for Best Recording Package for his work on Toolís 2006 release, 10,000 Days.
