African Dance in the Diaspora

Elements of African dance can be found in South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and America. The institution of American slavery created the elements of African dance in the African-American Diaspora.

African style dancing encompasses heavy drum beats, frisky, energetic movement, high jumps, rapid pulsations of the upper and lower back and acrobatics.

Much of these elements have influenced Hiphop and is still evident in modern times.

African dance does not only influence Hiphop. Dance forms such as the Rumba, native to Cuba, and the Samba, native to Brazil, share elements of African Dance. However, African dance plays a significant role in the foundation of Hiphop culture.
