MC Intellekt, whose real name is Dillon V. Maurer, currently resides in Gainesville, Fla., and attends the University of Florida, where he seeks a business degree. Originally from Jacksonville, Fla., his interest in hip hop began at a young age.

While diligently pursuing his academic career, his real passion lies in his music. As an avid hip hop head, he dedicates much of his time writing lyrics, free styling and emceeing. Known for his creative and intricate wordplay, intense free styles and fine-tuned writing skills, Intellekt has gained support and credibility where he has traveled and performed. Aside from emceeing, he is also heavily involved in poetry and spoken word. When listening to Intellekt's music, one must carefully note each lyric and its meaning. You will be hard pressed to find any filler or meaningless word. He is also a deejay and works on his own production. Owning a pair of Technics 1210s, you can find him spinning and scratching records of all sorts in the comfort of his room. He has started a collection of records, ranging from hip hop to jazz to classic rock, and continues to build on it.

Dillon was raised by his parents, both which influenced his musical interests. He followed the footsteps of his dad, who loves to write, and he acquired his mother's soul for music. His range in interests in different genres can also be credited to his parents. While his mother got him into soul and funk, his dad introduced him to rock and classic rock. Aside from his parents influence, he grew up listening and absorbing lyrical styles and beat production of not only hip hop groups, but many different genres of music.

Some of his major influences are:
  • A Tribe Called Quest
  • De La Soul
  • The Roots
  • Aesop Rock
  • Sage Francis
  • MF Doom
  • Mos Def
  • Talib Kweli
  • Miles Davis
  • John Coltrane

While hyping the Gainesville hip hop scene, Intellekt has worked with several other musicians involved in the hip hop world.

    These include:
  • CYNE (Gainesville, FL)
  • Sol.illaquists of Sound (Orlando, FL)
  • Plex of Algorithm (Miami, FL)
  • Dirty Digits (Tallahassee, FL)
  • The Messenger (Gainesville, FL)
  • Babbletron (Brooklyn, NY)
  • Pragmatic (Los Angeles, CA)

While working with these various artists, Intellekt has made appearances at many local venues around Gainesville.

He has done shows or participated in freestyle sessions at:
  • former Purple Porpoise
  • former Full Circle
  • The Side Bar
  • Orange and Brew
  • The Shamrock
  • Common Grounds
  • former Elevate

In addition to his constant performing, Intellekt has competed in many battles in the past three years and come out victorious in many of them.

Battles include:
  • Bad Boy on Campus, winner
  • Soul Cypher Emcee Battle, finalist
  • Underground Exposed, finalist
  • Phi Beta Sigma Emcee Battle, winner
  • Sigma Gamma Rho Battle, finalist
  • Intellekt is active in the UF's Hip Hop Collective, an organization dedicated to living hip hop culture and contributing to its growth. The club has different groups within it that are dedicated to the four elements of hip hop: break dancing, deejaying, emceeing and graffiti. In November, the Hip Hop Collective is responsible for putting on a big annual hip hop event, called Soul Cypher, in which people from all over the country congregate and share their love for the culture and music. Every year this event gets bigger and better. Showcasing emcee battles, break dancing competitions and hip hop acts, Intellekt has co-hosted the event for the past two years.

Simply adding to his already extensive list of hip hop involvement, Intellekt holds regular cypher sessions at his apartment every Tuesday. This is an opportunity for emcees of all skill levels to come together and express themselves.

Aside from his love for hip hop, Dillon spends his time working as a Japanese Steakhouse chef. Working at Miraku Japanese Steakhouse, located at 4005 S.W. 40th Blvd., Gainesville, Fla., he cooks at the hibachi grills in front of customers and entertains them with tricks and jokes.
