The Owl Society is a secret organization that recruits 15 freshmen each year.
The group was formed from members of the Psi Upsilon fraternity after the University revoked its charter.
Psi Upsilon members had kidnapped and reportedly handcuffed a member of rival Delta Psi to a pole in the summer of 1990.
Former members of Psi Upsilon formed the underground Owl Society. Psi Upsilon was received back into the University in 1995 with the stipulation that Owl members be prohibited from joining the fraternity.
In November 2002, five Penn students, three Owls and two pledges, doused a Princeton University student with motor oil and threatened to set him on fire. Two of the students entered a probation program while charges were dropped for the other three.
The incident prompted InterFraternity Council President Conor Daly to call for the University to abolish "pseudo-Greek organizations." The University was not able to discipline a society that it has no specific relationship with, however.
