Your Rights

Amendment I

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people to peacefully assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." ixv

Although censorship should be weighed against other factors, such as safety and the freedom of others, it is designed to protect the people, from what and for what reasons is not always clear. Although this site is geared toward questioning censorship, it doesn't condemn it's inherent existence. One person's freedom of expression is always limited by the freedom of another. The dilemma is who should the first amendment protect? The Supreme Court constantly deals with this issue, and doesn't always take the same side. When it comes to kids though, their protection always comes first

"Americans face a dilemma today between what they see as legitimate concern over what media violence is doing to America's youth and the time honored concern over allowing censorship as a response."xv
