Sunset in Las Alpujarras is colorful and breathtaking. This mountain area is located in the Sierra Nevada, southeast from Granada in Andalucía. The region, 50 miles wide and 20 miles long, stretches from the mountains to the sea (6).

Spain’s highest inhabited villages dot the mountainside of Las Alpujarras. Bubión, Pampaneira and Trevélez are a few of the white villages built into the hillsides. Trevélez, which has a white ham festival in August, is located at 5,000 feet (6).

The Alpujarras -- a great weekend trip from Sevilla -- also offers many outdoor opportunities such as skiing and hiking. The Sierras provide excellent skiing from December to March, and October is a great time to hike in the crisp mountain air (1). The Sierra Nevada also claims mainland Spain’s highest peak, named Mulhacén at 3,478 meters (7).
