Spain’s highest inhabited villages dot the mountainside of Las Alpujarras. Bubión, Pampaneira and Trevélez are a few of the white villages built into the hillsides. Trevélez, which has a white ham festival in August, is located at 5,000 feet (6). The Alpujarras -- a great weekend trip from Sevilla -- also offers many outdoor opportunities such as skiing and hiking. The Sierras provide excellent skiing from December to March, and October is a great time to hike in the crisp mountain air (1). The Sierra Nevada also claims mainland Spain’s highest peak, named Mulhacén at 3,478 meters (7). |
