Foot-And-Mouth outbreak in U.K.

The United Nations has warned of a global threat from the foot-and-mouth outbreak that has seen thousands of European animals slaughtered.

New measures to prevent the spread of the disease are being implemented around the world after the first confirmed case in mainland Europe.

The U.N Food and Agriculture Organization warned:

"No country can consider itself safe from the risk of the disease due to increased international trade, tourism, the movement of animals, animal products and foodstuff."

France -- which confirmed the first case in Europe outside the UK -- has 11 new suspected cases of foot-and-mouth and is extending slaughter programmes. In the UK there has now been 214 confirmed cases.*
